How to use the tip calculator

  1. 1Enter the bill amount.
  2. 2Pick a tip percentage or type your own.
  3. 3Enter how many people are paying.
  4. 4Turn on rounding if you want each share to be a whole amount.

How the tip is calculated

The tip is the bill multiplied by the percentage and divided by 100. A 20% tip on 64.50 is 64.50 × 20 ÷ 100 = 12.90, making a total of 77.40.

When you split the bill, the total including the tip is divided by the number of people. With Round up on, each person's share is rounded up to the next whole amount, and the tip shown is adjusted to match what is actually paid.

Tip or tax first?

Many people tip on the amount before sales tax. If your receipt shows a subtotal, enter that for the bill to tip on the pre-tax amount, then add the tax separately when paying.

Customs vary

Tipping norms differ a lot between countries and types of service. In some places a service charge is already included in the bill, so check the receipt before adding more.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a 15% tip quickly?

Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then add half of that again. For 40, 10% is 4 and half is 2, so 15% is 6.

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

Customs vary, but tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is common. Enter whichever amount you prefer as the bill.

What does round up do?

It rounds each person's share up to the next whole amount, so everyone pays an easy figure. The tip increases slightly to match.
