What each number means

  • Screen resolution is the size of your whole display in CSS pixels, as reported by your browser.
  • Physical pixels is that size multiplied by the pixel ratio. This is closer to the resolution printed on the box.
  • Browser window (viewport) is the area a web page can use, inside the browser's toolbars. This is the number web designers care about most.
  • Device pixel ratio is how many physical pixels make up one CSS pixel. Retina and high-density screens are usually 2 or 3.
  • Available screen is the screen minus permanent system areas such as the Windows taskbar or the macOS menu bar and Dock.

Why the numbers can look smaller than expected

Operating systems scale the display so text stays readable. A laptop with a 2560 × 1600 panel at 2x scaling reports 1280 × 800. Changing display scaling or browser zoom changes these numbers too, so reset zoom to 100% for the most useful reading.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my screen resolution not match my monitor's specs?

Your operating system applies display scaling. The physical pixels figure (resolution multiplied by pixel ratio) usually matches the monitor's native resolution.

What is the difference between screen size and viewport size?

Screen size is the whole display. Viewport size is the part of the browser window that shows web pages, without tabs, toolbars and scroll bars.

Does browser zoom affect the result?

Yes. Zooming in makes CSS pixels bigger, so the reported sizes shrink and the pixel ratio grows. Set zoom to 100% for standard values.

Is this information collected?

No. The values are read and displayed in your browser only.
