How to use the math quiz
- 1Pick a topic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, mixed or BODMAS.
- 2Choose a difficulty and either 10 questions, 20 questions or the 60-second challenge.
- 3Type your answer and press Enter. You will see and hear straight away if it is right.
- 4If you get one wrong, read the correct answer. BODMAS questions show the working step by step.
- 5At the end, review your mistakes and try to beat your best streak.
Practice that gives instant feedback
Mental arithmetic improves fastest with short, frequent practice and immediate feedback. Every answer is marked straight away with a sound and color, and wrong answers show the correct result so the right fact sticks.
Difficulty levels
- Easy: single-digit numbers and the times tables up to 5 × 10
- Medium: two-digit addition and subtraction and the 12 × 12 times tables
- Hard: three-digit numbers and larger multiplication and division
Division questions always come out as whole numbers, and subtraction answers are never negative.
What is BODMAS?
BODMAS is the order in which to work out a calculation:
- Brackets
- Orders (powers and square roots)
- Division and Multiplication, from left to right
- Addition and Subtraction, from left to right
So 3 + 4 × 2 = 3 + 8 = 11, not 14. The same rule is called PEMDAS in the US (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction) and BIDMAS in some UK schools.
Tips
Turn the sound off for quiet practice, and use the 60-second challenge to build speed once accuracy is high.
Frequently asked questions
Is BODMAS the same as PEMDAS?
Yes. They are two names for the same order of operations: brackets or parentheses, powers, multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction.
What age is this suitable for?
Easy suits early primary school, Medium suits children learning their times tables, and Hard is a good mental math workout for older students and adults.
Can I turn off the sounds?
Yes. Use the Sound button. Your choice is remembered in this browser.
Are my scores saved?
No. Scores are shown at the end of each round and are not stored or sent anywhere.
